Before charming viewers with his soothing voice and landscapes, Bob Ross served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a master sergeant. Stationed in Alaska, he discovered the inspiration for his iconic snow-topped mountains and tranquil lakes.

The Joy of Painting:

His PBS series, The Joy of Painting, aired from 1983 to 1994 and produced over 400 episodes and the famous quote, “We don’t make mistakes – we just have happy accidents.”

Fun Facts about Bob:

  1. He was an animal enthusiast

As a child, he nursed a wounded alligator in his family bathtub – yes, a full size gator! Later on, rescued animals like an epileptic squirrel often accompanied him on set.

  1. He sold very few paintings

By the time of his death, Ross had painted over 30,000 canvases but sold very few. Many were gifted to charity or to PBS.

  1. He disliked his hairstyle

The famous perm! Bob Ross actually disliked it, but kept it as a marketing strategy. It became his signature and is a big part of how he is remembered – there are even chia pets that imitate his iconic hairstyle.

  1. One of his works is listed for $10 million

“A Walk in the Woods,” one of Ross’s most historic works from his very first episode is now listed for nearly $10 million. Recent auctions of his other serene landscapes have fetched over $100,000 each
